Equipment

To start a volt hockey team, we recommend the following equipment:

  • 6 volt hockey chairs (8 if your budget allows)

  • 2 batteries and chargers per chair

  • 10 balls

  • 2 goals

  • 1 rink

The total cost for a complete setup is approximately $58,000

To help offset expenses, visit our grant resources page for links to organizations that fund adaptive sports equipment.

We've also launched an equipment loan closet to support new teams as they get started. If you're interested in borrowing equipment, please contact us for more information.

Volt Hockey Chair

Cost: ~$8,000 (including shipping from Denmark)

The volt hockey chair is the most essential piece of equipment for playing the sport. It is manufactured exclusively by IMMO, a company based in Denmark, who designed it in 1986.

The chair features:

  • A wooden frame mounted atop the motors and undercarriage

  • A battery compartment beneath the seat

  • Three pneumatic rubber tires: two fixed tires on the sides and one caster wheel at the back for maneuverability

  • A four-sectioned paddle attached to the front, used to control and move the ball during gameplay

  • Clear plastic safety guards near the arms and foot area to help protect the player during collisions

The chair is currently available in two sizes – medium and large – with the main difference being the size of the foot area. The joystick can be mounted on either the left or right side to suit the player's preference.

The chair can reach speeds of up to 9 miles per hour, and its performance settings—including speed, acceleration, and joystick sensitivity—can be adjusted using an external control box. This allows coaches or technicians to fine-tune responsiveness based on each player's comfort and ability.

While IMMO does not offer additional customization options, the chair is compatible with many standard wheelchair accessories, such as headrests, cushions, lateral supports, and safety straps.

Players also frequently make personal modifications, including:

  • Mounting the joystick in a centered position

  • Adding supports for ventilators or other medical equipment

  • Installing additional stabilizers or comfort features
